SOS INTERVIEW WITH A YOUNG WORD GODDESS

IBK slaying words at the Word War front #WarOfWords5

SOS INTERVIEW WITH IBUKUN AJAGBE, WINNER OF WAROFWORDS SEASON 5 SLAM POETRY COMPETITION AND 2ND RUNNER-UP, GCGT TV REALITY SHOW 2016.

Can you introduce yourself to us? (Full name, State of origin, Marital status, Occupation.)
My name is Ibukun Ajagbe, I am from Oyo State and I'm obviously not married, single and youthful. A poet is who I am.
Kindly share with us how growing from a kid into teenage years, and now as a celebrity?
Growing up as a kid came with aspirations, goals which haven't really been accomplished because of my "back then"  mentality but now as a teenager, I'm able to accomplish goals and dreams. Being a celebrity to say, is a good title but I've decided to maintain being who I am.
What is your Educational Background?
My educational background is not much of a failure, still in school and doing well like every other teenager, still I'm in school.

We understand you were the Winner of WarOfWords Season 5 Slam Poetry Competition, beating some of the hottest word wigglers in Nigeria to the game, also 2nd Runner-Up at God’s Children Great Talent (GCGT) Reality TV show recently, what were you feeling like during and after those competitions? Winning War of Words and being the 2nd runner up of God's Children Great Talent gave me joy, though both competitions were tough, having to compete with awesome, talented people, quite scary but I'm glad at what my gift from God has done for me and where it has brought me to.

How do you combine school work with poetry writing/performances?
Ibukun Ajagbe (center), always a winner with Adeola Adegoke 2nd Position and 3rd Position
@Onkowo TalkTheWOrd Poetry Slam (2015)
School is obviously stressful but how I deal with both school and my poetry is making school come first, yes and during my spare time I write, I write sometimes to release tension. Being called for a performance doesn't really affect school, even if it does, I try to catch up.

Now that you are a public figure, how do you handle fame, honour invitations to perform here and there?
Now that I've become a public figure, handling fame is what I've put in the hands of God so I'm really good to go and whatever invitations I get, I honor it, as long as it doesn't contradict my Faith in God and as long as it doesn't affect school.

IBK at GCGT Season 5 (2016)
What inspired you into spoken word poetry?
The thing that inspired me to becoming a poet isn't really a fairytale story , I attended spoken word classes in my church and I got the privilege to do it as a profession, thanks to my mentor - Aunty Atilola.

What are your favorite themes?
My favourite themes would be about love and God, respectively, they both have a lot to say
privilege to do it as a profession.

What do you do at leisure time?
What I do during my leisure time, well I either listen to songs, text, write or worship.

Do you engage in any other form of art aside poetry?
Besides poetry I find dance interesting and also singing.

Do you have any upcoming spoken word audio/ video? If Yes, Please tell us about it.
I have no spoken word audio or video yet but I hope to shoot one sometimes.

What are your plans for career, say 5 to ten years time?
My plans for my career is to be an inspirational speaker and a poet.

What words do you have for your fans out there?
To people who love what I do, or who love writing, know who you are, discipline yourself to perfection which can only happen with God and also be sincere, you can imagine things which could have happened to anyone, be imaginative, be original, be deep and in that deepness, be honest because poetry is honest.
Thank you for your time.

WHEN LADS SPOKE LIKE SAGES...

SOS POETRY SLAM 1.0

Silent Or Scream! Slam Of Sages...S.O.S!

SoundOfSages(SOS) Poetry Slam 1.0 might have come and gone but the memories linger longer than the ripples of water in the dancing tide by the sea side. It’s an experience the slammers, judges, Emcee, SOS crew, Programme Co-ordinator for the day (Benson C. Stephen ‘GrandBoss’; CEO TrueGospelZone), and even our Sound Engineer (DJ Stallion) are not  willing to forget in a very long period of time.

R-L: an attendee registering her name on the attendance register

The slam poets prove they’ve got what it takes to carry the emblems of a sage, individually and collectively; rolling and shooting words so wonderfully well that the Judges admitted they were “Sitting On Stones” at the sight and sounds that kept flowing from the audacious mouths of these seemingly youthful wor(l)d beaters and builders, such that all our three (3) judges stood up after the 1st Round, in search of Comfort stations to ease themselves from the battalion punchlines that had their skulls and bones giggling.

The 1st Round like the 2nd and 3rd was not too much of a surprise, as it was flawlessly won by Oloruntobiloba Abiodun (WriteHand) who came all the way from UNIBEN. Echebiri Gabriella Obianuju (BlueFlames), Oju Omamogho (Hummer) and Increase Nathaniel followed very closely with decimal points in between them.

ROUND 2
This round was particularly held by nine (9) qualifiers (Toby Abiodun, Stephen McNaevets, Oju Omamogho, Increase Nathaniel, Echebiri Gabriella O. ‘Blueflames’, Joy Nnebuogo Nwanokwai ‘JYC’, Afolayan Michael Adekunle ‘Broken Words’, Chibuzo Nwokolo ‘N-Buzz’ and Njoku Paul Chibuike Henry ‘Fr33zin Paul’) from the initial fourteen (14) that ignited the kick from Round 1; blazing hot, with Flames smoking blue with her “Oxygen” love poem while Oju’s eyes almost caught fire as he caused the audience to repeat the refrain of his poem ‘we need no mess higher…”, setting the stage in a Segun Arinze’s trademark “no holds barred” momentum. Stephen ‘McNaevets Biscuits!’ as fondly echoed by his fans gave the audience a take-home delicacy from his super-sweet, sagacious tongue-sweetening “LOGIC” poem, earning the 2nd place with 25.3 points after Toby’s 27.5, edging past Oju Omaogho’s 25, Increase Nathaniel and BlueFlames’ 24.6 and 24.4 respectively.

ROUND 3
Final Round came with a firmament, far-reaching than the proverbial burnt offering of Abel as Toby’s grit and wits had the Judges snapping fingers; slightly according his daring rendition above that of Biscuits, Increase and Oma with decimal points again separating the champion from the runner-ups. The thrilling, tear-dropping Flames could not win back the Judges with her award-winning “MAMA” piece that almost forced tears from the obviously empathetic Emcee.

The final score sheet read…
TOBY                   28.5                       MCNAEVETS      25.7
INCREASE           25.5                       OMA                    25.3
                                                 BLUEFLAMES   24.4

SIDE ATTRACTIONS!
PoeTHICK Samurai had a blast on stage as the sacrificial poet, jeering the crowd with his “Vain Refrains” before the slam commenced officially. Paul Word; Winner of WarOfWords4 also added flavor, performing few lines from his slam winning “SOS” piece, after Round 3.
At the end of each Round, judges were made to perform; one judge per round,   to add glamour, glitz, and of course provide the slam poets an opportunity to learn the art of spoken word poetry performance better, seeing some of their mentors on stage to their delight.

To further add to the rainbow’s seven, one of Nigeria’s best spoken word artiste, Soonest Iheanyichukwu Nathaniel (SIN),  graced the stage, mesmerizing the audience with his famous piece “These Children”.

Hey, if you say “Poets are too reserved” to make Kaffy feel jealous with crazy dance steps, then you’re in for a long walk to freedom from such falacy, you just need to see videos from SOS POETRY SLAM 1.0 that might make you Silent or Scream, Stand On Stones,  Shout Out Shhhhh... or Shiver On  Shock!! Be on the lookout ...
